Yeroskipou is a beautiful quiet small village just outside Paphos. This is the location of our apartment. The photograph above shows the village square which is very close to Ayia Paraskevi, one of the most interesting Byzantine churches on the Island which dates back to the 10th century. It's a basilica surrounded by 5 domes. Inside are beautiful 15th century wall paintings. In the village you can also visit the folk art museum as well as the famous 'Yeroskipou delights'
Paphos
Following the Roman invasion in 58BC, Pafos became the capital of the Island. Today, Paphos has a population of approximately 40,000 and enjoys a small town atmosphere. Ancient sites, the harbour together with modern accommodation and attractive taverna's make Paphos a popular destination. The Birthplace of Aphrodite (Petra tou Romiou) lies 25km to the east of Paphos. Legend has it, that Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty rose fro the waves in this beautiful place. It is and ideal place for a swim, picnic or to visit the restaurant on the hill behind. Kouklia, a small village near by, is the famous sanctuary of Aphrodite. A Lusignan Manor, houses the museum which contains ancient remains dating back to the 12 century BC. The Medeival Fort of Paphos sits proudly protecting the harbour. Built in the Byzantine period initially and rebuilt by the Ottomans in the 16th century. The promenade is lined with taverna's and souvenir shops and is a beautiful place for a quiet afternoon walk. The harbour is used by pleasure craft and local fishing boats. The Tombs of the Kings is an impressive World Heritage Site dating back to 4BC and the Ptolemy dynasty. The rock carved tombs were used for the burial of the richer citizens and the aristocracy. |
